Abstract
Three major ingredients (saponin, protein, and polysaccharide) were obtained from defatted Camellia oleifera Abel seeds by sequential extraction. A series of experiments were conducted to compare the antioxidant and antitumor activities of these three major ingredients. The antioxidant activities of these ingredients were evaluated by reducing power, hydroxyl, superoxide anion, and DPPH radical scavenging assays. All antioxidant tests showed that the protein had the highest antioxidant activity among the three samples, and the antioxidant effects of protein increased in a dose-dependent manner. In vitro, the antitumor activities of the three major ingredients against Hep G2 cells at different concentrations were examined by MTT assay. The polysaccharide exhibited the highest potency against Hep G2 cells, with an IC50 value of 5.826 ¥ìg/mL, followed by saponin (26.754 ¥ìg/mL). These findings suggest that the protein and polysaccharide from defatted C. oleifera seeds exhibit significant antioxidant and antitumor activities, respectively, which deserve further research.
